Begin with the end in mind.

Standard 1:  School library media coordinators demonstrate leadership.
Element 1a.  School library media coordinators lead in the school library media center and media program to support student success.
School libraries are dynamic centers in 2018. It is my continued goal to  focus on blended learning.  Currently, I am part of a cohort group with the Friday Institute.  This is a three part collaborative series titled, "Leadership in Blended Learning."

Element Ib. School library media coordinators lead in their schools.

I am the MHS School Improvement Team Coordinator.  This year, we worked together to create a new School Improvement Plan based on the AdvancEd Standards, the North Carolina School Improvement Planning Guide, and the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS).  The school improvement team meets every other month to implement and reflect on this plan.

Element Ic. School library media coordinators advocate for effective media programs.
  • In the 2016-2017 school year, Dare County Schools Media Coordinators received funding to purchase digital books using the Overdrive system.  The digital books support the digital learning initiative for Dare County Schools. I help students navigate this system and continue to work with the county-wide team to provide data to support this valuable digital resource.

  • Our school system is located in a small island community.  We support local businesses.  This year we had an online book fair before Christmas.  We partner with Downtown Books in Manteo for book purchases.
  • Downtown Books works collectively with our school Media Coordinators to provide author visits, support Battle of the Books, and help connect our professional literacy community.  This partnership is valuable to our school and our local economic connections.

Element 1d. School library media coordinators demonstrate high ethical standards.
Ethical standards and equal access are the focus of my personal educational philosophy.  I believe all students should have the right to digital privacy.  Students must learn the meaning of intellectual property and they must practice citation methods.  I work with whole classes to use NC Wise Owl and other digital databases.

The implementation of a new process to retrieve lost books was a big goal for me at Manteo High School.  Most libraries print the overdue book list from Destiny and give it to the classroom teachers.  These were small pieces of paper that sometimes were dropped, or misplaced and they have the book titles on them.  In order to protect the privacy of the students, I implemented a program of privacy and students now receive weekly emails about overdue books  The patron's right to privacy is now at the forefront of this program! When overdue notices are sent to parents, I send the call number and replacement price.  This is one of the best new things about our library.  I would attach the report, but it would violate their privacy.  This report is created in the library view of Destiny, through Report Builder.

Standard 2:  School library media coordinators build a learning environment that meets the instructional needs of a diverse population of students.
Element II
a.   School library media coordinators establish a learning environment that facilitates access to resources and addresses the learning needs of all members of the school community.
The Media Center is a comfortable place in our school.  I have a corner set up for in school and after school tutoring.  The North Carolina School of Math and Science students are housed within the Media Center.  The classroom allows for digital communication for these classes.  Students seeking Lexile appropriate material may also receive assistance in the Media Center. During Intervention Time, students utilize the space to do a number of activities.  Some study, some read magazines, some have club meetings and some
just relax.  I feel it is important that students take ownership of the space and that they have a relationship with the teachers who work in the space.

This year I am accepting a significant donation of print materials. I consider this to be a great collaboration with our community at large.

John Harper has been in the music business for most of his life and has worked for at least 12 radio stations, including a decades long stint as a DJ and on air personality at the Outer Banks own FM 99.1, WVOD. A passionate fan of rock and roll, John has been collecting biographies and books about rock and roll bands and idols for the last thirty to forty years. He has amassed a collection of approx. 40 - 50 books and is donating them to the library at Manteo High School where they can be enjoyed by future generations.

Element II b. School library media coordinators provide appropriate resources, services, and instruction for learners at all stages of development.
I help students use appropriate digital material through the NC Wise Owl databases.  When students have trouble with navigating or citing using the site, we use the NC Wise Owl tutorials to help each student have equal access to high level resources. It's my goal to have all students database college-ready.

Standard 3:  School library media coordinators implement a comprehensive 21st Century library media program.
Element III a.
School library media coordinators develop a library collection that supports 21st Century teaching and learning.
The Manteo High School collection is divided into genres.  Many classroom teachers are "Book Whisperers" and their classroom collections and instruction is based on the genre model.  The genres at MHS look like this

Element III b. School library media coordinators serve, promote and facilitate inquiry-based instruction and the effective  use of information and technology.
As a former AVID Center teacher trainer, and AVID Site Coordinator, inquiry is at the root of all my instructional pedagogy.  I use informational text to encourage students' intrinsic need to pursue personally relevant knowledge.

Standard 4:  School library media coordinators demonstrate knowledge of learners and learning to promote effective instructional practices.
Element IV a. School library media coordinators use effective pedagogy to infuse content-area curricula with 21st Century skills

I facilitate an ACT practice program for the entire school.  Each day the students participate in Sustained Skill Building.  Students answer released ACT questions via Google Forms.  The questions are of reading, writing, science and mathematics. The data is compiled and shared with the Administrations and teachers.  We use the previous years' data to select  appropriate questions.

Because we have such a large Hispanic population, it's important that the Battle of the Books is an event that will serve the entire population of the school.  I selected books in Spanish as well and will create a rich team of students who are reading with their peers in two languages.

Element IV b. Student library media coordinators know the content appropriate to their teaching specialty.
This is a professional training I use with both teachers and students.
RESEARCH METHODS IN A 1:1 ENVIRONMENT

Element IV c. School library media coordinators promote reading as a foundational skill for learning.

I hosted a Book Fair with the local bookstore Downtown Books.  My goal is to have Book Fairs that reflect the interest and ability levels of students in our school.  This year our theme was "Reading is Risky."

Standard 5:  School library media coordinators reflect on their practice.
Element V a. School library media coordinators analyze student learning.
We are an A+ school!  That happens when a faculty uses best practices to teach, analyze, and reflect on student learning.

In addition to my position as Media Coordinator, I also serve as the School Testing Coordinator.  As STC, I am required to reconcile all the students' course schedules, academic accommodations, and teacher schedules to create a school-wide testing program for the North Carolina Final Exams, End-of-Course tests, pre-ACT, pre-SAT, SAT, Extend 1, and ACCESS tests. All testing procedures must adhere to the standards of the State and Regional Accountability offices.  This is a comprehensive position and I work closely with the school counselors and the data manager to provide the appropriate testing materials to each student.  I am responsible for the security of the testing materials as well as the delivery of the test scores to the principal.

Element V b.  School library media coordinators link professional growth to their professional goals.
My professional and personal goals are so linked that I use this one website to document and share!
As an avid reader,  I try to read the books my students are reading so I am fully engaged in young adult literature. Participation the Battle of the Books competition will push me to read more titles relating to my students' interests.

Element V c. School library media coordinators function effectively in a complex, dynamic environment.
If there is one thing I've learned, it is that the Media Center is a fluid space.  When a teacher needs help- the first place they come is to the Media Center.  We must be able to facilitate instruction in a moment's notice.  When equipment malfunctions, students are at the desk.  Whether it is Intervention Time or After School Detention, the Media Center is the place to be. We must be on alert and able to work with diverse students on any number of projects.

The resources we utilize through the Follett Destiny system are always changing and improving.  This is a webinar I recently attended to stay abreast of the new tools.
